Designer Spotlight | LushModern: Decor for Urban Living | Urbilis

1. Tell us how LushModern got started. How did you and Ron, the garden designer, connect?

"A few years ago my condo set about commissioning our rooftop garden. Ron’s passion and horticultural expertise far outshined the other bids and he won the contract. I really enjoyed working with him through the creative process and it struck me that we would make a good team."

2. What challenges do you face as a gardener in NYC?

"I loved gardening when I lived in London, but since moving to New York 20 years ago I haven’t had an outdoor space to call my own. So I satisfy my green thumb with contemporary cacti arrangements."

3. What inspired you to start the company and create the products that you offer?

"I love all things modern and I know exactly where to shop for furniture, lighting, clothing and accessories. But indoor plants from local florists rarely make the grade for my contemporary aesthetic.

Choosing stylish plants and buying all the right planting components is a challenge for many with a busy life. So Ron and I decided to create complete kits with everything you need to add a touch of natural flair to your home. Our kits include beautiful vases and planters paired with hardy cacti or air plants, plus accessories for planting and care."

4. What is your favorite product from your collection and why?

"The Aerophyte Diva Statue (pictured) is one of our most distinctive products. The stylish chrome stand is the perfect way to show off the king of all airplants — the flamboyant Xerographica."

5. What is your decorating advice for urban dwellers on how to incorporate LushModern planters in their space?

"For windowsills I love the Zebra Cactus/Kiri Wood Planter. The planter is sustainable, lightweight and durable and the graphic pattern of the five Zebra cacti makes a strong statement.

In line with the principles of Feng Shui, I believe that your home environment should bring balance and calm—essential for life in the city and clarity of thought at work.

My advice is to clear out your clutter and surround yourself with things you love. When you're living or working in a small urban space, it's important that the objects around make you happy. Plants are one of the best accessories for any indoor space because they bring the vibrant, healthy look of nature."

6. What do you think are the most important things for people to know when starting to pursue indoor gardening?

"The most important thing is to have fun and to not be too intimidated. Try something indoors that is very easy (like the Aerophyte Diva Statue) and just enjoy yourself. Don't overthink things and keep it simple."

7. What’s in store for the future of LushModern? Any new and exciting plans?

"We are continuing to develop new products. Watch this space!"
